No, a lot of it is bands that are new and active today.

A fair amount of these bands aren't powerviolence either, but modern bands playing early 80s styles (the Repos, Direct Control, Government Warning, Wasted Time, etc.)

Well this blog seems to be mostley fastcore stuff but if you're looking for some PV bands I recommend are:

Anal Cunt
Charles Bronson
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
endless blockade
capitalist casualties
dropdead
deadstare
no comment

Yes some of these bands are also considered grindcore. PV and grindcore are pretty much go hand and hand and are for the most part the same thing imo the only difference being the different blasts used.

Genre classification is only useful in helping people find similar artists akin to their favorite bands and styles. Some genre labels get downright ridiculous and redundant. Fastcore? Come on... Is that a legitimate genre? That's like saying screamo is a real genre of music. I'm an enthusiast of a particular style of doom normally labeled "funeral", and I refuse to use that term on the basis that it sounds fucking gay.

It's called actually trying to get people interested in the music you listen to. If you pass it off as "more of the same" by saying all subgenres in one group are pretty much the same thing, who the hell's going to get excited by that?

I guess they're actual genre's for people who want to believe they're real. I'll never consider them legitimate genres, but no one should get red-assed over it. Call them whatever you want.
As for screamo, some kid leaping onto the floor and screaming for 10 seconds into the mic doesn't deserve its own sub-genre label. To me, it's just a lame punk derivative.

didn't you just make fun or every song of nd's scum right there?

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Aug 3,2009 9:26am
Why, was Napalm Death "fastcore" too? ND was the first real incarnation of Grindcore. Detuned, sped up punk riffs, screamed/growled trade-off's, and blasting. Or wait, were they screamo? I'm sure Mick Harris would agree.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 3,2009 9:27am

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Aug 3,2009 9:34am
Hah, Rev you know exactly what I'm talking about since you been to a lot of those shows. I'm talking about that North Shore, NH epidemic where it was a bunch of hc kids with mod haircuts just doing what I described because they had no talent to do anything else. They got worshipped for their 15 minutes in the scene limelight. ND was violent and had a distinct sound. Those bands were just laughable.

I am interested in hearing someone description of what "fastcore" actually is. To me, it's a redundant label, because it just sounds like you're trying to say Grindcore. That's like me saying I'm going to rip off old Darkthrone, image, sound, and all. Only we're not Black Metal, we're "Evil Metal". "Look! The emperor has new clothes!"

Thrashcore (also known as fastcore[1])
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrashcore

"screamo."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screamo

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Aug 3,2009 12:02pm
Oh, I know what screamo is considered, and wiki's definition is in agreeance with mine. It's some emo/spastic style of punk, I've just refused to call it screamo. So fastcore is just another way of saying cross over, or thrashcore. I've never really heard that term used until about a week ago. So you could even call it speedcore if you wanted to?

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Aug 3,2009 12:05pm
Screamo, at least to me, is what that wiki refers to as the first-wave of screamo (Pg. 99, Orchid, La Quiete, etc.)....I don't consider that second-wave screamo at all

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Aug 3,2009 12:11pm

toggletoggle post by dontlivefastjustdie at Aug 3,2009 12:40pm
i would say fastcore is bands like Hummingbird of Death. Bands that incorporate the speed and nastiness of pv but with good 80's hardcore/punk influence.

i love it all regardless of what its called...the faster the better.

Fastcore basically takes the early 80s sound and takes the speed to the next level, I guess you could say it's almost at a blasting pace but since it has no metal influence whatsoever, it's not grind. It differs from powerviolence just because fastcore is a more straight forward sound while powerviolence has a lot of time/tempo changes, etc.

And subgenres aren't stupid either. If a band is doing something truly different and new, why put it in the same category? Music evolves in all directions and not only are you undermining creative bands by putting them in the same old groups, but not believing in genres is like having no standards, why do you think people call shit like Korn metal?

all this shit had a definitive sound and it is reasonable to give it a specific name. screamo is a lame way to address it, but this genre is totally legit whether or not people use it to describe bullshit music today. the same can be said hardcore and metal (BYD, atreyu).

MikeOv said[orig][quote]
To me, it's a redundant label, because it just sounds like you're trying to say Grindcore.

grind evolved from crust punk and therefore has always had strong metal influence. fast hardcore has no inherent metal influence.

i've never really recognized a real stylistic difference between fastcore and powerviolence, i was always under the impression that PV was sort of less than serious microgenre used to describe a handful of fast hardcore bands.

in closing:
I love arguing on the internet and I hope someone here has never heard of crust.

I guess technically you're right, considering that fastcore and powerviolence pretty much go hand in hand anyway and the fans always love both, describing the difference isn't even worth the effort. You know what's funny to me though is that whenever people talk about powerviolence, they'll always say bands like Infest (pre-pv) or Spazz and Charles Bronson (second wave bands) rather than the bands in the song (Crossed Out, No Comment, Manpig, Capitalist Casualties, Man is the Bastard).

toggletoggle post by ZJD   at Aug 3,2009 7:45pm
if powerviolence ever had a definitive sound, its crossed out because that's who all the modern 'powerviolence' bands ripoff. the good ones anyway.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Aug 3,2009 7:46pm edited Aug 3,2009 7:47pm
It is kind of a bummer to me that powerviolence has almost become a formula.

"Fast part, slow part, fast part, slow part, mid paced part, three chord riffs, got it"

I disagree with your assessment too since a lot of what I'd call the best modern powerviolence bands are creating their own unique sounds (Iron Lung, Hummingbird of Death, Lack of Interest's new material, older Weekend Nachos, etc.)

toggletoggle post by ZJD   at Aug 3,2009 7:48pm
yeah, contemporary fast hardcore bands that identify as powerviolence are usually pretty unspectacular. still, i'm never going to see crossed out so its fun to see scapegoat and pretend.

toggletoggle post by ZJD   at Aug 3,2009 7:49pm
