how about things you've heard him mention and know he likes?
or stuff he's into... maybe burn a cd with songs you know he likes or ones you like and want to share with him
a really nice toothbrush for him to use on his trip =)
some chocolate or candy you'd think he likes that he doesn't have where he lives
if he's really into coffee and you brew it at home, why not get a cool mug that says something fitting on it for him to use while he's there?
