relax gents, the classic mode is still there. right now i'm happy with windows 7 so i don't care if they don't release another OS for 10 years again. i can already see that no IT admin would want to bother with windows 8.
also, I would love a touch screen and tiles are a great idea to convey a ton of information at a glance. This is something that android gets and microsoft get, but apple doesn't. Win8 looks very tablet oriented. For a desktop, not do much.
I think that's really what they're going for - a single OS that can scale to both tablets and PCs. Considering that Win Mobile 7 has gotten good reviews, I don't think it's a terrible idea.

you guys are right about the tiles and scalability. maybe they can do it right.
So the only upside I see here is that it cuts out some typical Windows-isms. By which I mean it doesn't look like half a dozen splash screens are going to try and load all at once on startup. With the bare bones structure I'd like to believe that transitioning between running applications won't be like trying to negotiate with a guy in a pickup truck to let you cut into his lane.
The rest of this is pathetic. If I'm going to buy a computer it's because I want a computer, not a cellphone and that's exactly how this is built. I don't care if there is an ergonomic thumb keyboard, it still eats up real estate that I assume I need if I'm using a computer and not (as previously mentioned) a cell phone. These "apps" look like absolute shit. I'm 29 years old and I need a computer to do things. For the millionth time: I'm not impressed that you can toggle back and forth between some vague bar graph screen and videos of my grandson playing softball. Show me a way to actually improve the quality of my life and make things easier, not just simpler.
In all fairness to Microsoft though, it took Windows a handful of generations to finally be smart enough to rip off Apple's OS. And since Apple hasn't drastically changed their OS in a while (what does that tell you), they've got no new ideas to steal.
Im pretty happy with the mouse that came with my iMac. I made them give me a wired keyboard though because the wireless one that comes standard is a flimsy POS.
