anyone that disagrees is a disgrace.

Owning video games > emulation
Owning movies > downloading them
Owning albums > downloading them

we have digitards (reimroc and others) here that think owning a digital copy of something is just as good, if not better.
Not saying owning digital copies is untr00, but if you say they're the same as owning an actual copy you are part of the digifag generation that needs to die out before it's too late.

Bunch o ungrateful pricks on this board

owning video games > emulation, HOWEVER...i've traded in or sold most of what i've owned so i could afford to get new games and that whole college thing. so now i don't give a shit.

owning movies > downloading them, only sometimes, if the money goes to the right place. i download movies/shows because i wouldn't spend money on them anyway. probably $40 a year i spend on movies and i still would if there was no internet.

owning albums > downloading them, this is fact. unless you want to check something out. then you realize you wouldn't buy it anyway and everyone is better off.

having one hard drive with everything on it = awesome.

I always try to own physical copies of the bands I enjoy because I want the lyrics, artwork and liner notes. CDs are the only things I really collect on a regular basis.

Yea ark. Not saying having digital copies is a horrible thing (I've got a HD full of stuff), but claiming a digital copy is better is a shame.
we ought to banish reimroc.

Owning a game means you get instruction manual, and that it's guaranteed to work on your system. Also means you won't get your xbox banned, so I agree here.

Owning an album means you support the artist/label, get artwork/lyrics/booklet, etc..., so I can agree here as well.

However, what the fuck benefit do you get from owning a DVD? Extra previews? The FBI warning? The little blurb on the back of the box that usually has NOTHING to do with the actual plot? I can't agree here. Especially after watching the turd that is Boondock Saints 2 last night. Thank god I didn't pay $20 for that awful crap.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Mar 9,2010 11:39am
you're killing the environment with your physical copies. every time you hold them.

toggletoggle post by c.DeaD at Mar 9,2010 11:39am
I never even downloaded a record. I think the only thing I have ever downloaded was gay porn and that didn't turn out so well.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Mar 9,2010 11:40am
I only give a shit about having hard copies of my absolute favorite media. If it's just something I'm going to pop in once every great while, I feel no need to keep it just to fill up shelf space.

Honestly, I only have about 80 DVDs. I would love to buy a lot more. I have about 10 on my pc.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Mar 9,2010 11:42am
I download plenty, because I'm trying to find new things to listen to literally every day.

I buy a lot of music, though. But I could never afford what all that I want to listen to.

I agree entirely that owning a copy is better.

Buying CDs, records or cassettes (in CSDO's case) supports the band. If it's worth listening to, I want to at least send cash to the folks who made it.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 9,2010 11:50am
Trust me, I've got like 100 albums I don't like that I bought and probably thousands of things I like that I haven't bought yet.
Tough economic times, these days. But, owning a copy is still better.

But how much?

As an example, I downloaded both Cynic albums when I was turned on to them a while ago. Love them both, they quickly became favorites. How much money did I deny the band by not purchasing those records? By a very GENEROUS estimate, they lost approximately $1.50 in revenue.

Meanwhile, I went to see them the second they came through Boston this year. How much of that ticket sale did they get to keep? I bet at LEAST $1.50. Now, let's discuss the $200 I spent at their merch table. How much of that $200 was band profit, from that hoodie, t-shirt, drum head, drum sticks, and CD I bought?

So you can see, my fucking that poor sorry band out of $1.50 actually earned them well over $100 in pure profit. THIS is the model way more bands need to adopt and get used to. Without that initial piracy, I might not even know who Cynic is right now. Hell, It took me 15 years to find out about them as it is!

I just downloaded the new Alcest after previously ordering the vinyl. I usually only download when I don't want to wait for something I know I'm going to purchase anyway.

Except when a tour shirt is 45 bucks.

A.) long sleve tour shirts are usuall 40+
b.) everytime I get an XL shirt at a merchant table, 2 years later the shirt shrunk and doesn't fit
c.) there's always a slight chance there's a hot girl selling merch, usually the first thing I look for when I arrive
d.) supporting a band thru merch is more direct than buying the album
e.) need more bands that sell shirts for 10 bucks

do you put your shirts in the dryer or hang them to air dry? mine don't shrink if i do the latter.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 9,2010 12:04pm
or maybe you have the same problem i have: the shirts aren't shrinking, the gut is expanding.

Physical copies >>>>>> Digital copies no exceptions.

Now convince Newbury Comics that they know that I know that they know a CD doesn't really cost $17.99.

I was never saying the digital is better than the physical. I was just saying that, to me, I don't see much sentimental value in the physical over the digital... not that I get a high off having stuff on my computer instead of in my hand.

What the fuck newbs charges 18 bucks?

I usually get an album there between 10-15 bucks. FYE and other ripoff joints cost 18-20.

the markup on CDs is above 1000% no matter where you get em. 'scuse me while i check out this blog...

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 9,2010 3:23pm
no way. you can get major deals online. for example, the other day on eBay I bought a German bands album for 6 bucks.

I stopped buying dvd's after I realized how much money I was wasting on shit I'd only watch a couple times. Cheaper to rent in the long run.

Now all these fools with gigantic dvd collections will be scrambling to buy the blu-ray versions of the exact same movies, ha!

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Mar 9,2010 3:33pm
Cheaper to rent.....even cheaper to download...is what I meant.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 9,2010 3:35pm
I've owned a bluray player for over 3 years now and never watched a bluray movie.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 9,2010 3:35pm
Fuck buying blueray!
More and more dvd s are cheaper now. I don't have an HD tv or surround sound at the moment so no blueray shit for me. Could honestly care less. VHS or bust.

Physical copies > digital copies until the physical copy of a 7" sells for $100 on eBay and 100% of that money goes not to a hardworking band or label, but a zitfaced geek behind a computer

When it comes to that, I'd rather just download.
