Just saw him as my train was pulling in. They're filming the movie "Day and Night" or something stupid like that.
Pretty sure he was wearing sun glasses too. What's with this dude?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2009 9:44am
Maybe his contact lens have been irritating him. I know even on gray days I need to wear sunglasses after a bad allergy day.

No, obviously he's a raging doucheking.

Best Tom Cruise movie = Top Gun or The Last Samurai. can't decide.
I guess I'll toss Eyes Wide Shut in there only because you get to see what's her name n00ked.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2009 9:55am
I'm going to say The Last Samurai.

Top Gun is easily the best movie to look for thinly veiled gay behavior that went completely unrecognized because it was the 80s.

I swear to god, that movie was a love story between Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise.

Ha, Days of Thunder how could I forget. Grease Lightning is that car in Grease, if my memory serves me right. Lighting, Thunder - close enough.

The Last Samarai was indeed a good movie though, even the ending is really the opposite of what happened in real life.
What's with all these historical movies that are completely inaccurate?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2009 10:05am
I'm sure it's a publicist or agent saying, "Tom won't do this unless X, Y, and Z happen in the movie. No one knows the real history who will see this in theaters, so if you want asses in the seats you'll do it."

Either that or "focus groups"....fucking focus groups.

There hasn't been a good, solid historical/epic movie since Gladiator.
Troy, King Arthur, Alexander - those all failed in my book.

But I gotta go with The Last Samurai. It's a great depiction of Japan's westernization and I think it's underappresh'd

Definitely. But since you're a history buff, correct me if I'm wrong - didn't Japan choose to HAVE the treaty? In the movie, the Emperor rejects the treaty after Tom Cruise stumbles in; I thought in reality Japan actually accepted the treaty which opened the doors up for more westernization, including the game of baseball.

Fuck yeah, I'm downloading the extended cut now.

If you liked Gladiator you gotta check out the Rome HBO series. Gladiator is romanticized but Rome tries for more accuracy and the acting is fucking fantastic.

Fellini's Satyricon is very historically accurate.

Never saw that. I would like to see an actual accurate depiction of historical events.
Braveheart, Gladiator, among others - all great movies, but the inaccuracies are a drawback. But it's Hollywood, what do you expect..

Haha yeah it's not really accurate - Commodore Perry knocked on their door with a monstrous fleet of warships and demanded they open their ports for trade. The emperor was given a few months to decide and finally accepted because essentially they had nothing to match western firepower and there were many upper class Japanese that were already "westernized" and were in for a money bomb.

But I thought the schism between feudal Japan and the ruling class was represented well.

And Tom Cruise can be a good actor and I like his movies but I would stay far away from him if I saw him on the street.

Tom Cruise was at Worcester Airport filming for this movie recently. Spider Gates is right around the corner, i was hoping for something epic to happen and he would get swallowed up by the 8th gate to Hell.

the best Tom Cruise role goes to Tropic Thunder.

I can burn them as data onto a DVD no problem. Downside is, I think I only have the second season lying around. Main story arc of the first season is shared between a Caesar and Pompeii's military expeditions, and a couple Roman soldiers in Rome, and the second season is Caesar's return to Rome, and the soldier's newfound dedication to Hades... it's a powerful series.

Talking about it makes me really want to actually buy it, I'll find a used copy somewhere and burn em.

The best part of Rome was the catacombs. Dead christian remnants from centuries ago - walls made of human skulls, miles of tunnel. Definitely was worth splitting off from the tour group.

Come on now. Hollywood distorts historical accuracies because drama and story-telling to a dumb audience is more important than reported history. You know this.
