I'm expecting a good amount of flack for this one...

...but I seriously love this band. After my latest Zappa kick, I've been on a crazy Coheed listening craze. I EVEN LISTENED TO THEIR LAST TWO CDs.

The first two CDs are genius. I love them. There's nothing to hate. I covered 33 my sophomore year of high school. It was one the best performances I've ever had. I get goosebumps when I listen to that song now just thinking of that performance.

What are your thoughts on this band? I will even accept negative opinions and then refute them with cold hard musical fact.

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at Sep 30,2009 8:52am
They're okay, but I've never been able to really get in to them. I would rather listen to My Chemical Romance for mainstream epicness.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 30,2009 8:54am
I'm a fan of MCR's second album but Coheed dwarfs them in awesomeness. FACT

Ugh.

Wannabe emo rush faggots who stole dillenger's drummer. NO THANKS. I had the displeasure of seeing them back in 2001 or something and they sucked horribly as a live act.
Sorry, not apreeshed.

Loved this band up until Good Apollo, but even that CD is a little much for me.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 9:00am
But they're oh so cool because they sing about science fiction!!!11

Aril is a homophobic homo. FACT
Blue is correct. The two Good Apollo's aren't very good cd's. More Rush and less pop rock. meh. FACT

I will say that C&C have always had atrocious guitar sounds though. The tone on SSTB makes me cringe.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 30,2009 9:14am
Ya it's pretty bad. Not very good EQing. They're also the kind of band that plays like they're gain is cranked but forgets that it's only set to 5.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 30,2009 9:17am
I had a serious boner for them in high school, along with Rush and Dream Theater they were all I ever listened to. Other than for sentimental value from a strange period in my life, I can't quite seriously listen to them anymore, maybe in the same way I thought Load and Reload were amazing when I was in 7th grade.

I can't deny that songs like Delerium Trigger, Time Consumer, and 2113 are awesome though. They turned me on to Maiden and then I plunged into metal.

toggletoggle post by timma at Sep 30,2009 9:17am
I respect what these guys do, but I can't get into to it. I find myself thoroughly annoyed anytime I hear them. Vocals remind me of Krusty the Clown's laugh.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 30,2009 9:20am
I never got the vocals thing. How many heavy metal bands have obnoxious vocalists? But no, when it's heavy metal it's AWEESOOOOOME.

The first time I heard Coheed, I thought, "Wow, these vocals are different. They rule." Everyone around me thought, "OMG EH SUNDS LIEK A GRIL!"
I WISH I had Claudio's range.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 9:30am
Don't even begin to compare metal vocals to Claudio's.

That's like comparing apples to oranges.

It's not that he can't sing - he's got range - it's the style he utilizes. I don't think it fits the music at all, let alone many other genres. Then again, I've always hated Rush's vocals too, but liked their (older) music.

The first time I was shown Coheed, I could not make it through a song, even though musically they were precise. I can't relate to the emotions or music they produce and don't particularly enjoy that kind of music.
I don't always listen to metal, but they are certain boundaries I don't cross, and Coheed is the ghey.

Yep, I used to, but I can't anymore. They sing under the guise of sci-fi but some of the lyrics are just too sappy. He has great range but he's much closer to a pop vocalist/straight emo whiner than a heavy metal one. Some metal leads and riffage mixed with pop hooks.

I'm not trying to compare them to a metal band. I guess my tastes just progressed past it. I can't listen to Dream Theater seriously anymore either.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Sep 30,2009 9:43am
Dream Theater has always been ghey, Coheed not so much.

Lulz at what I just said there.

Honestly, how many bands in all genres CAN be taken seriously these days? That's my problem - I'm having a hard time finding many bands that are 100% true to their music, lyrics, emotions, etc. Even in metal, it's hard taking some bands seriously. That doesn't mean they're bad, but - eh, whatever I'm talking out of my ass as usual on this board.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 30,2009 9:47am
To my knowledge C&C don't wear leather pants, so you might be on to something blue.

That's why the gods gave us music without lyrics.

I can't connect with DT anymore, but it doesn't mean they don't take themselves seriously, compared to a band like GWAR. I'd consider Primordial to be true to their music, for example. They bleed their emotions into their songs. But I also like a couple Dimmu albums, do they take themselves seriously? Of course not, they are not true to their music (whatever that would mean), but I don't care.

How many black metal bands live true to the image they give off? They're usually just a bunch of people that like metal and play it for that reason. Bands are just bands, if they make good music, that's a bonus. Some pour their emotions into it and make something special that you can connect with on another level than just enjoying the sound. Coheed is that band to some people. A lot of people take punk seriously too, I think streetpunk is a joke but I'll listen to it. I know black metal is a joke to many, but that shit does it for me. Don't let your disillusionment with humanity prevent you from taking your favorite bands seriously...hahaha.

Man, I should do some work today.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Sep 30,2009 10:24am
I saw them open for Heaven and Hell and was impressed. I thought it was a weird combination of a lot of elements I enjoy. Cheesy music mixed with metal elements with some radio friendly catchy moments. Kinda thought of them as like those 70s/80s prog rock/pop bands that were still very prog but also very cheesy.

In any event, haven't really checked out their recordings all that much, but at some point I shall.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 10:29am
nah, I do take SOME bands seriously - Primordial being one of them. I agree with you on that.
Honestly, and I'll sound like Conservationist here, but real black metal died (sorry for hijacking your thread martins) in the mid 90s. I'm not saying that today's blackmetal doesn't mean anything, but I don't really see or hear about many bands taking it to the next level (gorgoroth and dissection are some that did). As far as death metal, I don't see any gore bands actually going out and murdering people. Then again, that alludes to the question, what metal can be taken seriously?
Music is music, but finding any band that actually really follows through with their music and lyrical content is rare these days.
And yea, I've been in blackmetal bands but never burned a church down. Although that would be cool, minus the reprecussions.
You're right, bands are just bands, but finding bands that are more than that is hard.

Lol, I love this shit. While doing some labwork, I just listened through all of Silent Earth and the first Good Apollo. I love those cd's. Like I said, I was expecting flack and got it. You all are soooo predictable. And I wasn't saying Claudio's voice is comparable to high pitched metal singers but I think the obnoxiousness is. For example, I can't listen to Judas Priest because those vocals sound like me taking a concrete shit.

Seriously, I think the whole "true to your music" schtick is a little lame. Music is music is MUSIC.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 30,2009 11:49am
I've seen C&C 5 times in my life and there was a point where I would have called them my favorite band. Not into 'em anymore. That's that.

Predictability is posting an emo band on a metal board my man.

Wait, Coheed and Cambria is emo? God, I fucking hate classification of music.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 11:57am
music is expression. expression is music.

somewhere inbetween there are poseurs who have no identity or individualism. staying true to the music you like or produce is a representation of character. that's why I don't understand why people can just turn their back on certain types of music. (notice I didn't say specific bands). it's cool if you like metal and various other types of music, but if you love metal one day, then think you've found something better, then you never liked metal in the first place.
I love all types of music except anything poppunk/emo/screamo/scene/ bullshit. there's no redeeming qualities in the music other than pure entertainment and comical value.
to me, C&C falls under that catergory, but with a little too much rush inspiration.
let's hope you don't forget your likings of metal while you move on in your musical journey of discovery.
stay true to yourself and no body else.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 30,2009 11:59am
So do I, but yes, they are. Punk elements + pop elements + sense of "diy" with clearly defined human emotional elements. Coheed adds a lot of prog rock, but the basic idea is the same and they fit with other bands called emo.

"emo" makes people roll their eyes but I think there's some good bands that do it well. People call Planes Mistaken For Stars emo, but I think they fucking rock. Sunny Day Real Estate also. I like those bands way more than I do C&C these days.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 12:01pm
also, it's a generational thing. i may not be that much older than you, (what, 6-7 years?) but I absolutely despise the pop culture of the kids that were just in highschool or are still in it.
growing up with gen3 video game systems, cell phones when they're 5, shitty emo music and even worse gangsta rap.

martins, your generation sucks.

aril1: I do believe that feel is important in music - something that a LOT of bands lack. This is why I've gained this disillusionment to music in general. C&C is partially nostalgic for me but I just really like the music. Sure there's no great feel (except in the drum department) but I like the music at the core. There's extremely catchy parts juxtaposed with more proggy/technical sections. I love it. I still like a lot of metal. I was just listening to DSO yesterday. Band is so good.

arktouros: Coheed is not emo. FACT They are good. ALSO FACT

aril2: I hate my generation just as much as you do. There are very few redeeming qualities to kids these days. Everything is handed to them, they can barely speak English, are unaware of what's going on in the world, eat the worst food, listen to the worst music, and play the worst RPGs. I hate the majority of the kids I've met in school. While I'm not saying I'm above them (to some of you I'm probably below them) I still think there are some good things to come out of it. For one, Kanye West memes.

haha, I didn't say they weren't good. Trust me dude, I made everyone go fucking nuts from talking about them so much when I was 16.

And I didn't call them emo, everyone else does. Including people who listen to emo. Last.fm's million billion users don't lie.

And I hate speaking in generalities but your generation does suck but shitty parents with a lack of emphasis on education are usually to blame for this. Kids should not be raised on anything else but an NES.

According to this thread I never liked metal. :(

This whole pop-punk/emo or whatever (C&C is NOT pop-punk btw) thing just kind of makes me laugh. Who the fuck is anyone to say what is defined as quality music? Each person has their own definition of what music they enjoy for different reasons. I don't listen to pop-punk because the lyrics reach me, I listen to it because it's fun and has a lot of energy.

That's not something that aril values in music, that's fine but it doesn't make it any less valuable. I don't like the majority of black metal but does that mean I don't see the merit or value that it has? No, I understand why one enjoys black metal and respect it.

People need to stop being so bitter and should realize that not all music is made for them. It's not bad, it just doesn't appeal to them. To quote my high school music teacher, "there is music I like and then there is music I don't understand."

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 30,2009 4:16pm
Shhh Grant, this is RttP. You don't know what they'll say about your age.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 30,2009 4:33pm
Totally went over your head d00d.
I personally don't like that poppunk/emo/sceneshit; but that doesn't mean I don't see why people like it. It's all opinion in the end; however from and aesthetic viewpoint, pop punk does not display any emotion other than something that of which people of your generation or teenagers understand. That's the TARGET AUDIENCE, and it has successfully captured it. That's why I think it's funny.
One of my good friends who enjoyed blackmetal more than most I know went on to play in pop punk band because he knew it was a joke and attracted chicks. he appreciates most music like myself, but never disbanded his love for metal or other "genres" of which he liked.
Some of you may know who i'm talking about - I wouldn't want to drop names on this silly thread though.

nah, real punk is where it's at. when pop punk started getting popular, (LOL, on a side note, anyone remember the local punk punk band FAKE ID?) I just laughed and thouhgt it was a joke, which I still think it is.
I grew up listening to classic rock, metal, grunge and old school hip hop. I'm not going to deny the fact that I like 80s/early 90s hip hop or Nirvana's Bleach and stuff when that came out - nothing to be ashamed about. Pop punk isn't just for me - like I said, I think 90% of people that really felt attached to it were young adolescents that were just-learning-about-the opposite-sex-and-cried every-night-because their-girlfriend-or boyfriend-of-3-days broke-up-with-them-so-they-gotta-go-listen-or write-a-song-about-it-and-then-cry-some-more-but-write-love-notes-tomorrow-because-they're-oh-so-miserable-and-constantly-need-attention type people.
