I wouldn't say they created it. I think Converge gets the credit for that. In the mid 90's Merrimack Valley hardcore scene they were the band everyone wanted to be like including cave in. Jay the original singer just screamed really high pitch cause he was like 15 or 16 when they started. Then his balls dropped, his voice got deeper and he was out of the band.

I saw them with Converge and Diecast and I forget who else at Mama Kin way back. I got bored with Cave In's set a few songs in.

I saw Cave In and Jay Randalls band Gambit almost every weekend around 1995 - 97.

It goes without saying that Diecast sucks.

The only show I saw there actually was Converge too. But they played with Overcast. I think that was 1996.

Mama Kins had shows that didn't involve people standing with their arms folded? weird. I never went there cause it was always 21+.

Somebody tried to make an argument to me once that Saetia was the first screamo band. He didn't much appreciate me pointing out that it was actually Converge, and that Saetia was about as cool as a bag of dicks.
