Skins make Haynesworth a $100 million man
Football has its first $100 million defensive player.
Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth reached agreement Friday on a seven-year, $100 million - yes, $100 million! - record-breaking deal with the Washington Redskins.
The Redskins have scheduled a press conference Friday at 5 p.m. ET, assuming Haynesworth passes his physical.
The deal includes $41 million guaranteed in the first three years, and the maximum value of the deal could be $115 million. It is the richest contract ever given to a player and includes more guaranteed money than in any contract in NFL history.
And just like that, football has its first $100 million defensive player.
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/27/skins-make-haynesworth-a-100-million-man/
and
The Redskins have agreed to terms on a contract with cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the team has announced.
Hall was on the verge of becoming an unrestricted free agent, but he has agreed to stay on with the Redskins rather than test free agency.
Hall, 25, joined the Redskins last November after he was released by the Oakland Raiders at midseason.
He went on to play in seven games, with four starts, for the Redskins and finished with 25 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes defended.
Overall, Hall logged 73 tackles, a half-sack and five interceptions with the Raiders and Redskins last year.
A week before the regular season ended, Hall said that he hoped to re-sign with the Redskins.
“I do hope it works out here,” he said. “I would not have come here if I thought it was just for seven games. I came here with the intent and the mindset that I was going to be here for a long time. That’s the approach I’ve been taking.”
Hall, 25, finished his fifth NFL season. Regarded as one of the league’s most dynamic cornerbacks, he has 22 career interceptions.
He certainly brought play-making ability to Washington’s defense. He had two interceptions--one off Tony Romo and the other off Eli Manning--in his first three games with the club.
Hall, a native of Chesapeake, Va., played college football at Virginia Tech.
Hall began his NFL career as a first-round draft choice with the Atlanta Falcons. He earned Pro Bowl nods in 2005 and 2006. He was traded to the Raiders last offseason. |

HOLY FUCK HAYNESWORTH
how do the Skins manage to sign the biggest names for the biggest money and still make it under the cap every year? |
no idea, but the must have some number crunchin motherfuckers. |
Cornelius Griffin and Albert Haynesworth together in a 4-3 defense in DC is going to be ridiculous. I like Hall with the Skins too. A lot of people criticize him for his crappy play in Oakland but.... Randy Moss, Lamont Jordan, a lot of people with big contracts end up looking like assholes when they're playing for the Raiders. He was an immediate difference maker when he started playing for the Skins, and I think he's going to look a lot more like the DeAngelo Hall the Raiders thought they were trading for.
My one concern here is that the Skins had almost zero cap space by opening day last season, and they look like they're pretty bent on making it turn out that way again.
I was hoping to hear some news about T.J. Houshmandzadeh before I went to bed last night, but it didn't happen. It's safe to say that the Bengals are dead in the water for at least another 5 years. In like 2004 people were talking about the Bengals like they were the team of the future. I remember the Pats playing them in a regular season game, and it being dubbed as "the changing of the guard." The Pats ended up annihilating them, Corey Dillon went totally berzerk and launched a ball into the stands, and the Bengals really were never the same after it. If they were smart they'd finally trade Chad Johnson, take some draft picks, sign a couple free agent WR's (any of the guys leaving the Saints, Amani Toomer, Jabar Gaffney, Hank Baskett), try to get Cedric Benson back, and rebuild. |
how do the Skins manage to sign the biggest names for the biggest money and still not make any significant run into the playoffs every year? |
Fixed.
and Clinton Portis. FTW. |
very true....what Snyder still fails to realize that signing all this talents doesn't mean shit... |
yeah they need to dump him he's not a play maker and they made a one and done what two years ago.
also 100% back the Bengals statement, time to drop old names and rebuild more so then in Detroit. |
very true....what Snyder still fails to realize that signing all this talents doesn't mean shit... |
Attn: Jerry Jones |
well at least Jones still believes in the draft, unlike Snyder |
Of the moves so far here's my Impressed / Not Impressed.
Impressed - Haynesworth to the Skins. in a division with Brandon Jacobs, Brian Westbrook, and Marion Barber to worry about you're going to need a ridiculous middle to your defensive line. Done.
Not Impressed - Rex Ryan to the Jets. Ryan is always touted as this football mastermind. Has anyone pointed out that Ryan had Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terell Suggs, Bart Scott, and Samari Rolle to work with in Baltimore? Or that almost all of Baltimore's resources went to building their defense? How is he going to turn around a team with a weak linebacking corp, and that is content to sign guys like Brett Favre.
Impressed - Tully Banta Cain to the Patriots. Intelligent talented linebacker under 30 that already knows Belichick's system. For all the criticisms going into last season the Pats linebackers got younger in a hurry.
Not Impressed - The Cardinals not re-signing Kurt Warner. This is the reason why teams like the Cardinals end up as the Colorado Rockies of football.
well at least Jones still believes in the draft, unlike Snyder |
Is that why he traded 3 draft picks to get Roy Williams? |
I'm not saying he's made the best decisions involving draft picks, but he has drafted some excellent players over the last few years (Barber, Witten, Ware, etc.) |

Mike why the fuck don't you have a sports blog, I enjoy your bullshit more then the fuckers on EEI in the morning. |
lol....where have you been? |

maybe so but where has all these draft picks and free agent signing gotten either the Skins or the Cowboys.
NO WHERE THAT'S FUCKING WHERE.
but I don't care the Saints are gonna blow hard this season, another 5 years and they'll be a playoff team again woooo. |
wooooooord kid word is bond and other clique shit to throw out atcha. |

All I'm saying that, when comparing how Jones and Snyder do things, obviously Jones does it better and has been more successful. The fact is the Cowboys are alot better off than the Skins, with or without Haynesworth, because Snyder thinks the draft is completely worthless |
i wish haynesworth stayed in tennessee, but at least he gets to stomp on more cowboys' heads now in that division. that'll be entertaining. |

either way they're both just playing fantasy football IRL |
I agree, I'm just comparing Jones and Snyder |
yeah Jones does use the draft well but it hasn't gotten them anywhere so far, however I would love to see just one of the Cowboys RBs on the Skins since fucking douchebag Portis is a giant hole in the wallet. |

portis needs the money to buy all those funny hats he wears |

2749 yards in the last 2 seasons (#4 overall in the NFL last season). After 7 seasons he has a yearly average of over 1,300 yards, and that's after missing 8 games in 2006. Plus 72 career touchdowns.
Clinton Portis. FTW. |
Agreed, Mike, he's definitely very underrated, which I think is a product of being in the same division as Barber, Westbrook, and Jacobs.
Plus, he is the only former Broncos RB of recent memory that was actually successful after they left Denver...that's a big accomplishment in and of itself. |
The Pats signed Fred Taylor. |
OMG Brady got married, zoinks and shit |
Felger writing on WEEI.com:
"1. I would love to see the Patriots surprise me over the next couple of weeks and go big. Of course, there are plenty of reasons to expect they won’t (the economy, the looming changes in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Matt Cassel’s onerous franchise charge, to name three), but you never know with this team. All I do know is that whenever they’ve been bold, they’ve killed it, setting themselves up for championships (2003 with Rosevelt Colvin, Rodney Harrison, Ted Washington and Tyrone Poole) and perfect seasons (2007 with Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth and Sammy Morris) whenever they’ve paid for high-end talent.
According to NFL.com, the Pats have just $3.2 million in spending room right now, the second-lowest figure in the league. So the Cassel domino would have to fall and his $14.6 million cap charge shipped out before anything big took place. Or maybe it would be part of the deal. For example, there have been some fun rumors regarding a swap involving Cassel and Carolina’s franchised, four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers, which would be a move of maximum sex appeal, not to mention functionality. The Pats desperately need to upgrade their defense in general and their third-down play in particular, and Peppers does both overnight. The Panthers need a quarterback after Jake Delhomme’s playoff debacle and Cassel would actually come cheaper than Peppers ($16.7 million tag). The Panthers, at $1.9 under the cap, have the least amount of spending room in the league.
You following me? Peppers wants to stand up in the 3-4. The Pats need playmakers. Give the Panthers the tagged Cassel, take the tagged Peppers and reassess after the season as the league heads into an uncapped landscape in 2010. Maybe Peppers is an expensive rental. (would the Pats do that?) Maybe he’s a longer term consideration. I’d do it either way.
I know, I know. Dream on.
But hey, that’s what this time of year is for" |
The Pats signed Fred Taylor. |
I wish they signed Deuce instead, he'd be a solid back up even though he wants a starter job.
you old sucka and yo knee got blownidid up |

Ravens lose Bart Scott to Jets??? |
Adam Schefter's reported Scott has signed with the Jets.....and the Pats signed Chris Baker |
The Pats signed Fred Taylor. |
Nice! I fuckin like it. He'll work out great behind the Pats O-Line. Profootballtalk.com is having a server meltdown and I'm completely lost. |
I don't hate the Baker deal either. I thought they might take a crack at Robert Royal after the Bills released him though. |
LOL @ Jabar Gaffney visiting Denver. Good move leaving a team where Tom Brady is throwing passes to you to join an crowded wide receiver corp on a team with no defense and a diabetic throwing passes. |
I don't hate the Baker deal either. I thought they might take a crack at Robert Royal after the Bills released him though. |
This is why I like the Baker signing...
Quoting Schefter's blog: "as one Jets fan just texted me when he heard the news, “Whenever Pats pick up a former Jet, I get a pit in my stomach.”" |
ugh Saints schedule blows

I should have known David Thomas would be in the permanent dog house after that unnecessary roughness penalty that killed their shot at coming back against the Colts. Watson and Baker at tight end will be a nice combo. |
With that schedule I've got the Saints at 8 - 8 unless they pick up some big free agents. |
The Pats are playing the NFC South then? |
you're being nice, i doubt they'll reach 500 this season.
and they dumped Deuce so they better be spending for some Defense and OL this offseason. |
The Pats are playing the NFC South then? |
assuming so I got that from the Saints website. |
The Vikings traded for Sage Rosenfels. Fox Sports has it rumored to be for a 4th round pick. I say solid move by the Vikes if that's true.
Do not be the least bit surprised if TJ Houshmandzadeh ends up signing with the Vikings now. He was saying last night on ESPN that Minnesota was one of the teams in contact with his agent.
Vikings are my early pick for NFC North Champs. |
If I were the Vikings, I'd only make that trade if I lost out on Cassel, who is infinitely better.
I mean, imagine the Vikings with a good QB....they'd be damn good. |
damn good, they'd be dangerous kid.
Pats dont really need to do too much with free agents theyve got 4 solid draft picks two second rounders at that.
they do need to dump Cassel though, I mean yeah he was good and no one knows how Brady is gonna be with a bad knee but the Pats showed last season it doesn't matter who is behind center and don't any of you tell me you knew Cassel was gonna be the QB he was when Brady wetn down.
everyone thought the season was over and they needed to go out and get someone. If they get rid of Cassel it better be for some great fucking talent or a 1st and 2nd or 3rd round pick. |
I think the Fred Taylor pickup is awesome. We need a quality back after the bust that Lawrence Maroney has been. |
the bust that Lawrence Maroney has been. |
that seriously a worse comment then mine on Portis. |
I think the Pats should hold out for picks #20 (1st round) and #65 (3rd round) from Detroit......or #34 (2nd round) and #67 (3rd round) from the Chiefs
I don't think there will be any other serious takers....maybe Tampa |
the bust that Lawrence Maroney has been. |

He's been injured a lot. He barely played last season if my memory serves me right. |
yeah he was injured, but dood is only 24.

yeah the Vikes def jumped the ship and didn't want to wait around and see what happens with Cassel which is too bad that would have been a great fit.
not that I care but if he goes to KC or Detroit Cassel will get eaten alive.
if Garcia can make shit happend in TB I'm sure Cassel could too.
either way cap space and more good draft picks, do that shit. |
If the Pats could somehow talk Detroit into giving them #20 and #33 (1st pick of the 2nd round), you take that yesterday IMO
I think the best package Tampa would do is a 2nd and 3rd rounder (picks 50 and 81), but I think the Pats could get more. |
that might be the problem, they want more and aren't getting it.
TB just dumped a lot of older players so they might not want to give up too much for Cassel but I guess we shall see.
wooooooooooooo almost time for Guiness. |
holy shit the Browns just traded Winslow to TB |
also LOL @ the Skin calling a free agents and telling them they don't want to meet with them cause they're out of money now. |
Tampa has $60 million under the cap...so they def have the money
and lol@you obviously listening to date and Holley right now |
Hey I'm getting paid for that shit man, no one here in office I don't have to listen to my Ipod or the soft rock station the ladies enjoy.
so fuck yeah I got EEI on and I'm surfing the net, I've only got two files left to proof read and edit with an hour left.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT!
WOULD!
YOU!
DO! |
hey man I'm doing the same, so
THAT'S
WHAT
I
DO |
Tampa has $60 million under the cap...so they def have the money
They also don't have any players. They cut like 8 guys this week. |

5 but yea, Brooks and Dunn (LOL!) are both way over the hill as is Galloway and June is not that good....Hilliard can still do some things, but he's not a huge loss |
Brian Dawkins is visiting the broncos right now. i have been saying the Pats need this guy for months. whats the deal?! |
I don't think they need him, they need a SS more than a FS. |
Schefter is reporting Vrabel is being traded to the Chiefs
!!!!!!!!! |
BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
WHAT THE FUCK??? WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU TRADE ONE OF THE BEST LINEBACKERS YOU'VE EVER FUCKING HAD? |
I'm holding out judgment for 2 things:
1) What they get from the Chiefs in return?
2) Who they get to replace him?....which might not happen until the draft |
He's one of the only linebackers I've seen to have the most TD's as a linebacker in a Superbowl. Yea, let's trade him away. Good job, Pats. |
lol....so you're pissed they traded a LB that they happened to use in goal line situations?
that's a little silly IMO |
Well let's think about this. He's getting older, and I think it's a contract year for him. Like Rusty said I'm reserving judgment until I hear what kind of compensation they're getting for him. I'm hoping for at least a 3rd rounder plus a late round selection. If I hear the words "Larry Johnson" involved I'm going to be pissed. |
Per PFT:
"So if they can come to an agreement on Vrabel, when will Matt Cassel make his way to Missouri?"
How sick would it be if we walked away with 2 out of KC's top draft picks. Thanks Pioli! |
lol....so you're pissed they traded a LB that they happened to use in goal line situations?
that's a little silly IMO |
Well, I just used that as an example. My point is that he's a very versatile player and we need him. |

What if instead of LJ, Tony Gon Gon is part of the package? |
The Big Show is speculating that Vrabel might be a chip to sweeten the pot in a possible deal for Cassel to get the 3rd pick overal....this is intriguing |
I'd be less than upset if we ended up with Tony G. But Gonzo, Watson, Chris Baker, David Thomas.... that's a lot of tight ends. |
True...but Watson has been a pretty big disappointment, Baker won't start either way, and as you said earlier, Thomas is in their doghouse. |
John "Booger" Clayton is reporting an undisclosed draft pick for Vrabel.......but WEEI is working the phones to find out more, and they're saying no one can confirm or deny that this is part of a possible Cassel deal |
MORE DRAFT PICKS PLZ K THX |
Hopefully they trade Cassell too. Then we could possibly get Aaron Curry with the Chiefs 1st round pick to take Vrabel's spot. |
Fuck all major sports with no salary cap. It's like racing cars with no classes, who ever has the most money is going to have the best shot. Fuck that right in the ass. Get on with the NHL's 38 million a year per team and I will care. |
Pats got Fred Taylor.
and Gaffney went to Denver. |

lol@complaining about a lack of a cap in an NFL thread. |
BULLSHIT!!! Vrabel and Cassel for ONLY a 2nd rounder? AWFUL |
That is an atrocious trade.
But so was Welker at the time, if you think about it.
Vrabel is great, but old, and Cassel will do well anywhere. |
Welker wasn't an awful trade at the time at all...I was very excited for that trade when it happened. |
Why? His numbers in Miami were not great at all. |
If you watched Miami at all when he was there, it was obvious he was the diamond in the rough there....I knew the Pats could easily exploit his talents, even though Miami didn't know how to use him |
I did watch him.
Maybe in the VERY rough!!
I didnt know you could see das future.
Kudos. |
Lito Sheppard to the Jizzets. Fucking blows. Bart Scott went to them as well. |
I did watch him.
Maybe in the VERY rough!!
I didnt know you could see das future.

He looked great in Miami. What are you smokin?? He torched the Pats a few times when he was on the Dolphins. |
BULLSHIT!!! Vrabel and Cassel for ONLY a 2nd rounder? AWFUL |
Me flipping out on this wasn't so silly now, was it? |

Me flipping out on this wasn't so silly now, was it? |
It was when I had complete faith that Belichick wouldn't take a deal this lopsided.....lol |
The pats were kind iof in a bind because of the fact that they HAD to trade Cassel to clear up all that cap space. Scratch that up as Pioli knowing that and taking it to the Pats. Regardless, the Pats can still make the best of this with more free agents and the draft. Who knows, they might pick up a monster with that pick? |
What makes it worse, at least for me, is the report that has come out since that both the Lions and Bucs tried to swoop in last minute with offers....I gotta assume at least Tampa's was a better offer, but came in too late |
Well trading Vrabel instead of cutting him saves the patriots from taking any caps hits. Frees up 3 or 4 million to sign some better players. |
