Skins make Haynesworth a $100 million man

Football has its first $100 million defensive player.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth reached agreement Friday on a seven-year, $100 million - yes, $100 million! - record-breaking deal with the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins have scheduled a press conference Friday at 5 p.m. ET, assuming Haynesworth passes his physical.

The deal includes $41 million guaranteed in the first three years, and the maximum value of the deal could be $115 million. It is the richest contract ever given to a player and includes more guaranteed money than in any contract in NFL history.

And just like that, football has its first $100 million defensive player.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/27/skins-make-haynesworth-a-100-million-man/

and

The Redskins have agreed to terms on a contract with cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the team has announced.

Hall was on the verge of becoming an unrestricted free agent, but he has agreed to stay on with the Redskins rather than test free agency.

Hall, 25, joined the Redskins last November after he was released by the Oakland Raiders at midseason.

He went on to play in seven games, with four starts, for the Redskins and finished with 25 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes defended.

Overall, Hall logged 73 tackles, a half-sack and five interceptions with the Raiders and Redskins last year.

A week before the regular season ended, Hall said that he hoped to re-sign with the Redskins.

“I do hope it works out here,” he said. “I would not have come here if I thought it was just for seven games. I came here with the intent and the mindset that I was going to be here for a long time. That’s the approach I’ve been taking.”

Hall, 25, finished his fifth NFL season. Regarded as one of the league’s most dynamic cornerbacks, he has 22 career interceptions.

He certainly brought play-making ability to Washington’s defense. He had two interceptions--one off Tony Romo and the other off Eli Manning--in his first three games with the club.

Hall, a native of Chesapeake, Va., played college football at Virginia Tech.

Hall began his NFL career as a first-round draft choice with the Atlanta Falcons. He earned Pro Bowl nods in 2005 and 2006. He was traded to the Raiders last offseason.

HOLY FUCK HAYNESWORTH

how do the Skins manage to sign the biggest names for the biggest money and still make it under the cap every year?

no idea, but the must have some number crunchin motherfuckers.

Cornelius Griffin and Albert Haynesworth together in a 4-3 defense in DC is going to be ridiculous. I like Hall with the Skins too. A lot of people criticize him for his crappy play in Oakland but.... Randy Moss, Lamont Jordan, a lot of people with big contracts end up looking like assholes when they're playing for the Raiders. He was an immediate difference maker when he started playing for the Skins, and I think he's going to look a lot more like the DeAngelo Hall the Raiders thought they were trading for.

My one concern here is that the Skins had almost zero cap space by opening day last season, and they look like they're pretty bent on making it turn out that way again.

I was hoping to hear some news about T.J. Houshmandzadeh before I went to bed last night, but it didn't happen. It's safe to say that the Bengals are dead in the water for at least another 5 years. In like 2004 people were talking about the Bengals like they were the team of the future. I remember the Pats playing them in a regular season game, and it being dubbed as "the changing of the guard." The Pats ended up annihilating them, Corey Dillon went totally berzerk and launched a ball into the stands, and the Bengals really were never the same after it. If they were smart they'd finally trade Chad Johnson, take some draft picks, sign a couple free agent WR's (any of the guys leaving the Saints, Amani Toomer, Jabar Gaffney, Hank Baskett), try to get Cedric Benson back, and rebuild.

yeah they need to dump him he's not a play maker and they made a one and done what two years ago.

also 100% back the Bengals statement, time to drop old names and rebuild more so then in Detroit.

Of the moves so far here's my Impressed / Not Impressed.

Impressed - Haynesworth to the Skins. in a division with Brandon Jacobs, Brian Westbrook, and Marion Barber to worry about you're going to need a ridiculous middle to your defensive line. Done.

Not Impressed - Rex Ryan to the Jets. Ryan is always touted as this football mastermind. Has anyone pointed out that Ryan had Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terell Suggs, Bart Scott, and Samari Rolle to work with in Baltimore? Or that almost all of Baltimore's resources went to building their defense? How is he going to turn around a team with a weak linebacking corp, and that is content to sign guys like Brett Favre.

Impressed - Tully Banta Cain to the Patriots. Intelligent talented linebacker under 30 that already knows Belichick's system. For all the criticisms going into last season the Pats linebackers got younger in a hurry.

Not Impressed - The Cardinals not re-signing Kurt Warner. This is the reason why teams like the Cardinals end up as the Colorado Rockies of football.

I'm not saying he's made the best decisions involving draft picks, but he has drafted some excellent players over the last few years (Barber, Witten, Ware, etc.)

All I'm saying that, when comparing how Jones and Snyder do things, obviously Jones does it better and has been more successful. The fact is the Cowboys are alot better off than the Skins, with or without Haynesworth, because Snyder thinks the draft is completely worthless

2749 yards in the last 2 seasons (#4 overall in the NFL last season). After 7 seasons he has a yearly average of over 1,300 yards, and that's after missing 8 games in 2006. Plus 72 career touchdowns.

Agreed, Mike, he's definitely very underrated, which I think is a product of being in the same division as Barber, Westbrook, and Jacobs.

Plus, he is the only former Broncos RB of recent memory that was actually successful after they left Denver...that's a big accomplishment in and of itself.

Felger writing on WEEI.com:

"1. I would love to see the Patriots surprise me over the next couple of weeks and go big. Of course, there are plenty of reasons to expect they won’t (the economy, the looming changes in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Matt Cassel’s onerous franchise charge, to name three), but you never know with this team. All I do know is that whenever they’ve been bold, they’ve killed it, setting themselves up for championships (2003 with Rosevelt Colvin, Rodney Harrison, Ted Washington and Tyrone Poole) and perfect seasons (2007 with Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth and Sammy Morris) whenever they’ve paid for high-end talent.

According to NFL.com, the Pats have just $3.2 million in spending room right now, the second-lowest figure in the league. So the Cassel domino would have to fall and his $14.6 million cap charge shipped out before anything big took place. Or maybe it would be part of the deal. For example, there have been some fun rumors regarding a swap involving Cassel and Carolina’s franchised, four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers, which would be a move of maximum sex appeal, not to mention functionality. The Pats desperately need to upgrade their defense in general and their third-down play in particular, and Peppers does both overnight. The Panthers need a quarterback after Jake Delhomme’s playoff debacle and Cassel would actually come cheaper than Peppers ($16.7 million tag). The Panthers, at $1.9 under the cap, have the least amount of spending room in the league.

You following me? Peppers wants to stand up in the 3-4. The Pats need playmakers. Give the Panthers the tagged Cassel, take the tagged Peppers and reassess after the season as the league heads into an uncapped landscape in 2010. Maybe Peppers is an expensive rental. (would the Pats do that?) Maybe he’s a longer term consideration. I’d do it either way.

I know, I know. Dream on.

But hey, that’s what this time of year is for"

The Vikings traded for Sage Rosenfels. Fox Sports has it rumored to be for a 4th round pick. I say solid move by the Vikes if that's true.

Do not be the least bit surprised if TJ Houshmandzadeh ends up signing with the Vikings now. He was saying last night on ESPN that Minnesota was one of the teams in contact with his agent.

Vikings are my early pick for NFC North Champs.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Feb 27,2009 11:46am

I mean, imagine the Vikings with a good QB....they'd be damn good.

toggletoggle post by W3 @ work at Feb 27,2009 11:52am
damn good, they'd be dangerous kid.

Pats dont really need to do too much with free agents theyve got 4 solid draft picks two second rounders at that.

they do need to dump Cassel though, I mean yeah he was good and no one knows how Brady is gonna be with a bad knee but the Pats showed last season it doesn't matter who is behind center and don't any of you tell me you knew Cassel was gonna be the QB he was when Brady wetn down.

everyone thought the season was over and they needed to go out and get someone. If they get rid of Cassel it better be for some great fucking talent or a 1st and 2nd or 3rd round pick.

yeah the Vikes def jumped the ship and didn't want to wait around and see what happens with Cassel which is too bad that would have been a great fit.

not that I care but if he goes to KC or Detroit Cassel will get eaten alive.

if Garcia can make shit happend in TB I'm sure Cassel could too.

I'm hoping for at least a 3rd rounder plus a late round selection. If I hear the words "Larry Johnson" involved I'm going to be pissed.
What if instead of LJ, Tony Gon Gon is part of the package?

The Big Show is speculating that Vrabel might be a chip to sweeten the pot in a possible deal for Cassel to get the 3rd pick overal....this is intriguing

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Feb 27,2009 3:04pm
I'd be less than upset if we ended up with Tony G. But Gonzo, Watson, Chris Baker, David Thomas.... that's a lot of tight ends.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Feb 27,2009 3:11pm
True...but Watson has been a pretty big disappointment, Baker won't start either way, and as you said earlier, Thomas is in their doghouse.

John "Booger" Clayton is reporting an undisclosed draft pick for Vrabel.......but WEEI is working the phones to find out more, and they're saying no one can confirm or deny that this is part of a possible Cassel deal

MORE DRAFT PICKS PLZ K THX

Hopefully they trade Cassell too. Then we could possibly get Aaron Curry with the Chiefs 1st round pick to take Vrabel's spot.

Fuck all major sports with no salary cap. It's like racing cars with no classes, who ever has the most money is going to have the best shot. Fuck that right in the ass. Get on with the NHL's 38 million a year per team and I will care.

Pats got Fred Taylor.
and Gaffney went to Denver.

BULLSHIT!!! Vrabel and Cassel for ONLY a 2nd rounder? AWFUL

toggletoggle post by Hater at Feb 28,2009 3:36pm
That is an atrocious trade.
But so was Welker at the time, if you think about it.

Vrabel is great, but old, and Cassel will do well anywhere.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Feb 28,2009 3:39pm
Welker wasn't an awful trade at the time at all...I was very excited for that trade when it happened.

toggletoggle post by Hater at Feb 28,2009 3:40pm
Why? His numbers in Miami were not great at all.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Feb 28,2009 3:56pm
If you watched Miami at all when he was there, it was obvious he was the diamond in the rough there....I knew the Pats could easily exploit his talents, even though Miami didn't know how to use him

toggletoggle post by Hater at Feb 28,2009 3:57pm
I did watch him.
Maybe in the VERY rough!!
I didnt know you could see das future.
Kudos.

It was when I had complete faith that Belichick wouldn't take a deal this lopsided.....lol

The pats were kind iof in a bind because of the fact that they HAD to trade Cassel to clear up all that cap space. Scratch that up as Pioli knowing that and taking it to the Pats. Regardless, the Pats can still make the best of this with more free agents and the draft. Who knows, they might pick up a monster with that pick?

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Mar 1,2009 11:13am
What makes it worse, at least for me, is the report that has come out since that both the Lions and Bucs tried to swoop in last minute with offers....I gotta assume at least Tampa's was a better offer, but came in too late

toggletoggle post by Mattkings at Mar 1,2009 11:46am
Well trading Vrabel instead of cutting him saves the patriots from taking any caps hits. Frees up 3 or 4 million to sign some better players.
