I'm not sure if this is in the right place so feel free to nail me to a cross if I'm wrong.

I'm thinking of moving to Boston from Miami. Im tired of shitty shows that no one goes to and every few months a show that everyone goes to where everyone is a dome sort of a dumb fuck or scene kid.

So i figured Boston might be a good place to relocate to. My school here in Miami has an exchange program with Suffolk university so shit is on the cheap for me.
So i was just wondering if there are any Bostonians here to answer some shit for me.

Hows the transportation in Boston? I would be in the beacon hill area could i get to venues on the public transportation for cheap or should i bring a bike?

Is the Boston scene all its cracked up to be? we sit here in miami fantasizing about living in a town where there's a decent amount of people at shows and a good big show at least a couple times a month.

Suffolk University? Not related to music but fuck it. Anyone wanna let me know whats good about this place?

Tyler from Dissector goes there. It has a lot of drunk tramps. So, bonus.

Bring a bike anyway, in case you want to see the whole show and not waste money on a cab ride back to your dorm.

The transportation is pretty good, wouldn't hurt to have your bike too though. It's pretty cheap. The commuter rail is a bit pricey but if you'll be living in town you don't need to worry about that. I'm a little out of the loop on the scene though, sort of depends on what kind of shows you'd attend.

No clue on SU.

Ah hardcore mostly, metal and punk are also good in my book.

if i had been considering it I wouldn't go now. Its spelled brutal and it should only be used by anchor men describing some gruesome and gory event.

If i go its gotta be Suffolk cause the program only has that and UMass Boston which has no dorms.

Yes, Worcester is a joke. Some big tours you might want to see at the Palladium but that's about it.

Me and the username RobinG on here book a good bulk of metal/punk/insert heavy genre shows in and around Boston. Add us both on MySpace and you'll be able to be in the know about a good portion of shows that are happening.

If you're mainly into hardcore add this on your MySpace, it's a page for most of the hardcore shows that go on--

SU is on the orangeline I think. that means at a lot of metal shows, you will miss the last band so that you can get the orange line out of town. biking isn't bad if it's not winter, but winter here lasts a long time.
what bands do you like?

Boston is cool. The best areas for college kids to live in are Roxbury and Dorchester. Especially around the Dudley Station area. Rent is cheap (for Boston) and there's a decent scene and lots of great people.

if you are into boston hype bands, don't worry about the T since those shows end around 10pm. you get to see shows at the ICC like this

and are 102319038123 degrees

If its on the Orange line then you definately want to be in Roxbury. The Ruggles St. area is right on the subway line.

Also, Blue Hills Ave. is a good place for students to live.

for whoever asked what i listen to:
Hoods, Furious styles, Kids like us, DBD, AFB, Wintch Mob, Bishop.
I mostly listen to hardcore, but i enjoy punk and metal shows a lot too.

theres only shows like that pic in miami three times a year at most and thats because all the kids from three counties away come. Even then most people who come like to stand still and get bitchy when you stage dive.

only sad thing is i wouldn't be able to get up there until 2010 cause i wont qualify for the exchange program until then.

Dude I lived in Miami for 2 years n I gotta say the scene over there is way better than Boston's, they take you more seriously. Maybe your hanging around with the wrong crowd

Miami's changed. A couple years ago we had a prosperous scene with plenty of shows. Now, were lucky for a handful of big shows a year. Other than that its small shows the bands, plus 30 other people at most. I have to drive an hour or two for most of my shows. I was thinking Boston because i have a friend who spent this summer up there and brought back some real stories. Miami is dying. I'm looking for anything with the faintest trace of a heartbeat.

I don't know, I think the greater Boston area (for shows, among other things) is pretty cool. Lived here my whole life and there always plenty of hardcore/metal/punk/experimental shows going on. Every day there seems to be something. Just look at the events page alone, tons of shit. Half of it isn't even listed!

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Dec 9,2008 12:12pm
i think boston has a pretty good scene for most forms of rock music. i could pretty much go to a show every night if i wanted to/had the time/had the money.

toggletoggle post by aril at Dec 9,2008 1:17pm
Boston's black metal "scene" (hate using that word) is on the rise too, I believe.
