I dont find it hard and depending on the sound you want. Boxie or soft or pounding. I find it easy, because you can tune it how ever you want! You get to fix the sound you want others to hear in front of you. Also you need to think of the tuning in how your pedal will react and the solid feel of the inner head when your pedal hits the head.? I dont mind it without one, but it just sounds hollow to me and with no whole, it sounds to me you just are keeping in the sound you want to hear by muffling it. Dont foreget it depends on what you may have in the drum itself!
