Not the state Georgia - the country.
This is bad news for that region - and if it escalates - the world. Someone is going to retaliate.

The US now has called for an immediate cease-fire. Not going to happen buddies.

it's a former russian satellite linking the middle east with russia. it borders turkey, azerbaijan, and russia.

I think this was timed perfectly with the olympics...whole world is busy watching them to care for a conflict that is very similar to the start of ww2.

aka when Germany rolled into neighboring countries to "reunite" germans.

If I am correct, south ossetia (in the north of georgia) used to be part of russia til very recently, in fact north ossetia is in russia.

I think WWIII is bound to happen sometime. There's too unstable environments in our world today. WWIII would happen out of a chain of events; for example, if the US decides to join in a small skirmish like this one, and someone decides to attack us, we'll have to intervene some more. And then other countries would, and then other ones, and so on.
That's why the whole presence of Israel is creating so much drama in the Middle East. Just about every country down there does not want Israel there - but Israel has a strong alliance with the US and some European countries so it's kind of a tug of war.
The tension is boiling again, I'm just waiting for the pot to explode.

If China ever steps into any war with the US, I'm afraid we may not stand a chance.
We do have many different types of destructive bombs, but as I learned in college, a lot of them are politically motivated (ie "We're America. We have this. Don't fuck with us.")
We all know that if ANY country drops large scale destructive bombs in any other sovereign nation in the world, it will result in an all out war. Bombs represent power and technology, but to actually use them will require some serious balls, as its impact will be unforgettable and deemed immoral. If you had to push the button to drop an anti-matter bomb on a nation, would you?

Old tech: bombs:

New tech: autonomous micro-drones.

In the time it took you to be outraged at this reply, one of your political enemies pressed a switch on his console. The cicada on the tree outside your window flew right inside the house. You had one brief moment to be amused before you realized the "cicada" was actually an ultralight housing for a caseless .45 round. The next day they found you with a hole in your forehead and brain chips on the wall.

toggletoggle post by aril at Aug 10,2008 1:06pm
haha. Cicada bullet. nice.

I think that the most popular term for bombs these days are "weapons of mass destruction." Frankly, I'm more terrified on biological warfare. Such weapons exist today that could destroy an entire nation in no time; the question is whether or not it will have an affect on world affairs. Of course it fucking will. Any country (no matter who it'll be ... terrorists are more likley) who participates on destruction in a large scale will have to be retaliated against. That's just how it works. The fact that the US has numerous weapons which are capable of destroying humanity is scary, only in the sense that if we ever decide to use them again, I've got a feeling the rest of the world won't like it.

China can barely keep tabs on its own population. They use outdated Russian weaponry and are only well trained enough to wage an effective war in their homeland. The only thing they have going for them is having 1/6 of the worlds population.

We saw what our Abrams are capable of doing to T-72s in Iraq. We have the new Raptor warplane which is the most sophisticated and deadly fighter/bomber in the world. We spend an outrageous amount of our GDP on our military.

If we ever went to war with China, we would step all over them.

One interesting thing I found out about the Chinese military. There was a news report about how a ton of Chinese troops who responded to the earthquake doing humanitarian and rescue work suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They have VERY few if any veterans left in the military and almost no combat experence at all, stretching back a few decades. Plus, they've been trying to change their officer and NCO systems because the Soviet based one was crap and it still suffers from a large gap.
They have jumped greatly in technology and upgrades, but they are still lacking behind us and have a number of weapons that have a higher rate of failure vs success. They are really trying to push the grown of their navy because they are still a defensive based military. They can't move themselves very far in large numbers for a big operation. Even an invasion of Taiwan would be a MASSIVE undertaking for the Chinese military.

We shouldn't sit on our hands, but at the moment China would have a numbers advantage, but that's about it.

TBILISI, Georgia -- Russia opened a second front of fighting in Georgia on Monday, sending armored vehicles beyond two breakaway provinces and seizing a military base and police stations in the country's west, the Georgian government and a Russian official said.

The new forays into Georgia -- even as Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on signed a cease-fire pledge -- appeared to show Russian determination to subdue the small, U.S.-backed country, which has been pressing for NATO membership.

If there are anymore wars, there will be a draft. if we go to war with iran, they will have to either nuke them or start up a draft. when going to war with china, it's a numbers game. China's defense is purely numbers. in all conflicts they just push out canon fodder in the form of human bodies. Throw 200,000 over vietnam and suffer 69,000 kia and it's nothing to china.

Yeah that was awesome how they had their tanks heading for the capital, stopped, waited and hour, and turned back.

I would have loved to be in that capitol seeing people shit themselves out of fear that russia was going to roll in.

All NPR is talking about is this war. And they are saying scary shit, how if georgia had been part of nato this would have been ww1 all over again. how two random countries have a war which trips automatic alliances.

honestly this is still not over, we walked down a path to something akin to global war. Russia's just going to do this again if we don't do something to punish them, poland is bitching at the EU for not threating sanctions.

It's unfortunate that no one in east europe can do anything, russia has threatened to turn off the power and leave them in the cold (they supply all of the energy to eastern europe and 50 percent of the energy to germany)

'After the Russian entry into Gori, a column of approximately 100 Russian vehicles rumbled down the highway toward Tbilisi, setting off a new round of alarms among Georgians that the Russians planned to seize it. Soldiers in the convoy waved at reporters and shouted jokingly that they were headed for Tbilisi, before turning north off the road and setting up an encampment and series of checkpoints. Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers continued to move around the area Wednesday night."
