damn it, I just had a 200GB drive from 2003 die.

Maxtor diamondmax plus 9.

I turn it on and when it tries to access the drive it just makes a lot of noise.

the worse thing is that I was use that to sort things as I was sorting them. it had all my mp3s on it, a bunch of work stuff and a bunch of home stuff. I might have lost a few radio shows on it too.
oh well.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 1:20pm
oh, I am going to take it home and put it in the freezer for a few hours and then try accessing it.

when my maxtor 40GB died, that brought it back to life.. well.. until it heated up.

I need to get 2 500GB drives.. that would be about $600 though..
I need those 2TB atomic chips.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 1:28pm
No backups? I never trust hard drives. I have multiple backups of all my useful files, my child pornogarphy, for isntance.

And I did try the freezer trick once on one of my brother's notebook drives, didn't work though :(

I also have a pile of 60's,40's, and 20's that I'm not sure what to do with. I got to melt them down.

Make a Japanese transforming fighter robot out of all of them.

there already was a thing I posted a long time ago in a pictures thread about a robot made of old HDs.
here is one you can buy:

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology. that's the term I was looking for.
I need tons of that.

toggletoggle post by slowlypeelingtheflesh nli at Jan 18,2006 2:18pm
I have a maxtor 200 gig external and it works like a charm

Jan 18,2006 1:33pm - wade

build a robot aaron.
~~~
i'm already on that ; )
~~~
oh and when aaron told me about his hd dying the first thing i said was something like "after you go on and on to me about being more organized about my back ups...you didn't have this backed up"?
~~
i'm guessing you're gonna get home, put it in the freezer...and when we get back from our "date", i'm going to make jewelry and you're gonna work on the drive

we're so romantic!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 2:31pm
it will be rmantic cause we will be drunk.
and by we, I mean you.
cause I have to drive.
you had best drink at least one more drink than me.

I love the WD Raptor, thing is fucking fast. I don't know if I'd pay $50 extra to have the glass top though. I was checking those out a few days ago.

There's a bunch of cool shit coming out for PCs soon. HDDVD, Bluray, Vista, Tuners with cablecard support, SocketAM2, perpendicular recording. Can't wait for that shit.

Also some guys from Adaptec just came by and gave me the pitch on Serial attached SCSI. I've never even heard of this shit before. At any rate, they handed over a bunch of SAS controllers for me to fuck with.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 3:25pm
I heard about SATA SCSI like last week. I don't even remember what's the different with PATA, SATA and ATA, but if I could bet $$ on the faster one's, I would say PATA since it's both newer and everyone knows that parallel processes kick serial's ass.

I just went with Seagate to replace the master drive on my old Mac.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 3:43pm
vista looks really mac-y and cool, but I don't have good enough computers for it.

HDdvd and blue ray are like yawn.

the concept of hard drives piss me off. I want a solid state solution in the TB's with at minimum a 3Gb bus.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 3:48pm
The only thing I want out of vista is cablecard support. I could really care less about everything else. And as far as how it looks... it's going to look just fine when I revert everything back to a windows2000 theme with 2 colors of grey.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 3:50pm
Also, Seagate bought Maxtor recently.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 4:05pm
heh, I revert xp to that too.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 4:10pm
Yeah, I really don't need bubble letters, fruity colors, or animated windows minimizing/maximizing. That shit just slows you down.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 4:11pm
I like shadows.. that's about it

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 4:19pm
you should try out this Emma Watson XP theme

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 18,2006 4:25pm
I don't even know who that is...

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 18,2006 4:37pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 19,2006 3:30pm
heh, ok, now I know who she is.

anyhow, I put the HD in the freezer and then was able to get a couple files off it before it started clicking again. I put it in the freezer again and I'm waiting for it to cool down again. I've taken one of carina's 3 200GB drives to back things up too.
I'm thinking about just ordering this:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202195622&adid=17654&dcaid=17654
300GB with a case for $150.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 19,2006 3:43pm
it seems like as long as I'm doing one read at a time it's ok

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 19,2006 4:47pm
God damn it Emma Watson is hot.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 19,2006 5:21pm
GD, I get access to the drive for about 2-3 minutes and then I need to leave it be.

I've copied a bunch of stuff off it, but my freezer is defrosting...

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Jan 25,2006 10:22am
we should get a mega machine at home where we store everything and then extrnal drives for backups...

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 25,2006 10:30am
that's the thing, it's my backups that are failing.

carina, I just found this, 8GB microdrive for a camera:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BO0SG...=nosim/102-2482727-9540936?n=172282
$196.64, free shipping, $40 rebate.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Jan 25,2006 10:38am
wow

good deal

i still think a new machine with our own folders and then external drives for specific uses..

i dunno but i don't have my stuff on a machine..all on extrnal drives
so this is making me nervous

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 25,2006 10:42am
actually, what should make you nervous is that you aren't orgonized and have things in one location only...
maybe you should sort out your data tonight.. make sure your 2 drives are the same...

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 25,2006 12:41pm
ok.. my work drive just died.
HOW THE FUCK DO 2 200GB DRIVES DIE IN THE SAME WEEK!?!

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 25,2006 12:48pm
It's weird. They always go in pairs. Just like old married people.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 25,2006 12:48pm
this one is a western digital one 200GB made in 2004.
that's still during the warrenty!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 26,2006 12:11pm
ok, I ordered 2 320GB drives and 2 cases (with fans)

case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145656

drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144392

toggletoggle post by handinjury at Feb 9,2006 7:57pm
I think one of my hard drives is fucked up, its making lots of noise. This sorta hi-end noise. I backed up my important files off this drive. I just installed Xp on this PC about a month ago. I would hate to have to re-install shit allover when this drive shits out. Fuck, the noise from this thing is hurting my ears, cant take it anymore, I gotta shut this puter off.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 15,2006 1:29am
thanks so fucking much western digital.
somehow a 3 year warrenty means dick.

you also have a drive labeled with a 3-year warrenty and it's only actually got a 1 year.
