hey middle east, mabe some day, you will put in some lights that aren't red and white? maybe some blues and greens? I hate shooting in red lights.

id: the last time I saw them was at o'briens for like one song when I ran in on a show that ended early or something. before that, I think it was at jarrod's. they had a lot more slow, "doomy" parts than I remember. they definitely fit into this fest and they are from NH which gives them even more points in my book. anyhow, for a two piece, their sounds was perfectly full. during the doomy parts, the drummer looked like he had the breaks on and was holding himself back.

ocean: they were so fucking loud through that PA. it sounded awesome, but my fillings were rattling. it was early-ish in the night, but they got an awesome response from the crowd. I thought at one point they were done, but then they came back and played another song. that probably made dying muse happy cause he just showed up.

kevorkians angels: I thought it was going to be the normal same old set they normally play (plus the new song backstabber that they have been playing). they played the standard KA hits, but then played a ganggreen cover. it was super fast to say the least with brad singing. I'm also not sure when the double bass (almost blasting ) drums were added to the ones you forgot, but from on the stage, it sounded awesome.

syzslak: wasn't that the name of bad guys in the land of the lost? maybe not. I think this is one of the pitsbough bands that joenc is always talking up (like bitchslicer). they were really good. there was some sonic youth/rock in fluences that you could hear in their songs. everyone in the band sung too which was cool. Wasn't the drummer in another band from down there and sang too? at one point, the guitarist, thursten moore doppleganger, jumped into the crowd with the mic and thrashed around on some guy, in people's faces, and on his back before jumping back up on stage.
(note: I think the bad guys from the land of the lost were actually called sleasstacks)

magrudergrind: damn, was their set awesome just like I thought it would be. they played 02984294 (that's base 8 for you math nerd) songs in a 15 minute set. I think they actually played longer than they normally play. every time I see them, they play better and better. If they keep it up, we will see them touring the US opening for napalm death.

wet nurse: another band that was so good. I guess I've e-known the drummer for many years (worked pr at earache). they started off with a slower intro. I had heard the CD a couple times on a car ride, but forgot mostly what it sounded like. the vocals were strange, but the only way I think I could describe them is if tommy giles (BTBAM) circa the first BTBAM CD tried to cover candiria songs. I'm not just saying "candiria" cause the singer's black. I'm saying that cause the beginning of the singing was very rappy.. and then the singing patterns of the last song were vulture-like screaming, but in a rap-like pattern. the music was all over the place too. some times it sounded like watchmaker, other times rocky.

conifer: I think they only played 2 songs (or was it 3, I forget). at some point in the middle of the set, zack broke a string and the rest of the band played a loop until he fixed it. the last song they played didn't sound familiar and then w3 came over the tell me it was a new song. I figured since I thought they'd been in the studio lately. they set up in their normal fashion, but king douche didn't make an appearance. odd.

buried inside: I had been hoping that they would play the new CD in one loooong track and that's what they did. it was awesome to see and a testament to the stamina of the band that they played for the whole 35 minute set with out stopping. they sounded really tight too. they ended and walked off with the sampler playing the last track off their CD, but I think the sound guy cut it short.. er.. I forget. I'm pretty sure that joe wouldn't like them, but we'll see from his review.

unearthly trance: they were super slow. I saw them before and don't remember them being as heavy as they were. their music had a doom/death sound to it, but it was ultra slow. there was also effects pedals that they used. at the end of their first song, I think that they realized that they hadn't hooked one of the fx boxes up so the bassplayer quickly grabbed it and set it up under the viel of a bunch of feedback from the singer/guitarist. with this band (like with conifer) it seemed like the drummer lead most of what they were doing. I think that he could have speeded up or slowed farther down and the other guys would have just followed him. it reminds me of the solipsis set were the drummer has a metrenome ticking in his ear and they can play the tracks at whatever speed they want.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this, there was alot of people from PA, MD/DC, NY, and even some from VA...too bad the local support wasn't as good as it should have been for the line up this weekend. The crowd who was there was incredible though, and all the bands played amazing over both days! I can't remember the last time I had so much fun, and everything went really smooth, even with late starts both days.

It would be alot of fun to have this happen again next year, but I do not know if I could pull off another that is as good as this one!!!

Thanks again everyone! I am glad you all had as much fun as me!

other highlights: magrudergrind, syzslak, conifer, of course kevorkians and abhorred, and phobia fuckin killed!

Great show! we had ablast! I wanna order a couple of those sharp t-shirts if you have any left, Joe. Thanks to everyone who got thereearly to see OCEAN. and ofcourse thanks Joe. You gotta do this again next year.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 18,2005 7:20pm
I think "locally" the only issue was that everyone who normally goes to these shows was in a band that played.
there are only a handful of people that I can think of who werent there. also, there were tons of people that I've never seen before who came to the show.

any impending issues that may occur suck, but this fest went off awesomely and was well attended.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Jul 18,2005 7:20pm
I will take it over and screw it all up if Joe wont do it next year.

Please no...

I had a really good time... I was also expecting more people, but I think most of the usual suspects of this board/"scene" turned out... The fest didn't really get many new people out unfortunately, aside from the out of staters that came up (50 of em maybe?). My friend Tom is here from OH for the fest, by the way, add that to the list of states!

That was one INSANE show... I can't believe I survived listening to more than 4+ hours of doom metal...I genuinely wanted to kill myself by the end of Grief's set... it was wonderful...beautiful in a way...only Joe could book a show like that... I may just give Joe any money I have to keep Notcommon going because he is the only one in the local scene with the balls to try something like this let alone pull it off in any semi-successful way. I'd suggest everyone makes a donation to the label... I really want to see what's next.

toggletoggle post by Al_Ravage   at Jul 19,2005 12:55am
Also I forgot to add...KA was their usual good set, but Wet Nurse stole the show...that band was great...I was about to leave and get something to eat thinking "what kind of stupid band could this be", and then they came on and it was pure brilliance....the band toward the end with the gong was pretty good...but by then the doom metal was like an ice pick to the skull, and grief was still to come...in the history of mankind has there ever been a 2 day fest featuring mostly doom bands? brilliance...pure brilliance

You didn't like their music because of their pants? Their pants were not even super tight, those guys are all wicked skinny. They all looked like Zach from Conifer, but skinnier and with facial hair.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 19,2005 9:25am
but compared to KillerKadoogan, the guys in buried inside were chubby.

grief: I can honestly say that I've never really ever listened to grief. I remember getting one CD a long ass time ago, but I don't remember ever listening to it. after seeing them live, noosebomb is going to feel a bit empty next time I see them live. yes, I will admit it here, I like grief a lot more than noosebomb. just think about them playing with randy on bass, mike (boe) on drums, jeff on guitar, and that terry dude on the crowd. their set stole the night. that Terry guy was crazy and played the audience so well. by the end, he joe black'd (from the end of school of rock ) TWICE! I thought they were going to carry him out like that.
the most drunk of that set would go to keith who fucked with jeff's mic over and over. then he almost got kicked out for trying to rip the barricade down, but then finally did get kicked out when he was up on stage.
