We're here and it's hot and sweaty...where's the ac? |
|
holy cow is it hot in here. also this is a totally different culture you are talking about here. man... culture shock!!11!
soman: I think it's one of the guys from VNV nation... but since I really don't know, I will keep my my mouth shut. it was pretty simple house spin off of late 90's industrial. no voices, some samples, but mostly a stream of simple 303, 808, and 909 loops. I think I would have found it a lot more interesting if there had been some more stuff that was going on, but it was just one guy with a laptop. this is a little out of my area of expertise now a days, but it seemed like the crowd was grooving to it. adding a house-ish beat layer to things is always a super easy way to kick people's feet up. the crowd was a standard far of black clad and leather clad set of rivet heads. they were hoppping around a lot. |
|
I'm 99% sure that the soman set was done with reason. it had a very rebirth sound to it. |
|
imperative reaction: well, out of their whole set, there was only one track that I knew. they must have been playing newer stuff cause the songs that I knew were from the cd that came out back around 99. their music is still good and they get a million points for using a live electronic drummer. my only one beef is that the vocals were softend for the live set. I'm not sure why, but they are harsher on the CD that I've listened to a million times. still, they had a lot of energy and sounded killer. |

home, working on pictures. |

vnv nation: well, I've loved VNV's CDs for a long time so it was really only a matter of time before I saw them. For starters, they were hilarious. more to the point, the irish singer of a germany band was hilarious. that guy, Ronin, could have his own stand up and I would go see it. Every few songs, they would pause and he would talk. some people from the crowd would yell things out to him and he would totally go off on it. here a few of them:
----
"freebird"
"oh, not that again" - ronin
"play metallica"
"well, at least you are getting better. Except their last two albums which are crap. how bout some slayer? hell awaits would be awesome" - ronin
----
"... you're all feeling good? doing good? you're all individuals? all wearing black?" - ronin
"there's no darker color" - someone from the audience
"they haven't envented a darker color?" and then he goes off on making clothing that is a singularity.. the complete absetence of light. the color of light hitting the event horizon of a black hole. this set the seeds in all the "mit" people from the area
"FUCK MIT" - someone from the crowd
"oh, really?" ronin "I guess you didn't get in"
----
there were plenty more. He made fun of myspace, live journal, ICQ and iChat. that guy is hilarious.
anyhow, their set was disgustingly sweaty, but they played a nice mixture of new and old tracks. future perfect is my favorite Cd so the set list made me happy enough. Mark and Ronin were backed up by soman and some other guy. it made the set alot more interesting cause it wasn't just a DAT show. there was an actual drummer on stage. they had some videos playing behind them, but I couldn't really see what was going on on them. a couple times I would see a VNV logo or what not, but I saw it too late to snap a picture of it. |

Yeah, their new stuff is super clean, and that is mostly what they played. Good set anyway!

I think im going to have to go to conn to see them, I also did not realize that it was going to be $25.oo. (hope it will be cheeper in conn.) |
|
what happened to ronan? he looks terrible. |
|
wow, blast from the past, Soman is totally on the top of his game these days. i found this thread because I was trying to discover who opened up the show (i was dead-set on believing it was noisuf-x); Soman was just getting started back then. |
