one of the more comical aspects of my New Orleans disaster was 2 days after arriving finding a box cutter in the bag I used as a carry-on. Yes it was mine, no i didn't know it was there and no they didn't stop me at the security desk. There it was right in the front pocket all yellow, sharp and new. I feel so much safer now flying.
samething happend to me flying outta virginia beach to boston....i have an inside pocket in my main pocket of my carry on bag. they could see the box cutter in the scan but couldn't find it when they searched my bag so they just let me go. i didnt know i had it in there, it was only there cause i worked the night before doing stock ! goodthing we got extra security.

You put your luggage in a little open box thingy and it digitally 'sniffs' your stuff for traces of explosives.
I was going to Nashville, and got a bit concerned, cuz I couldnt remember if I had ever kept my pistol in that bag. Either way, nothing happened.
