Stoffel from Yacopse was playing bass in Flachenbrand when they toured with us in Germany. We kept calling him the Gestoffel, among other things. He quit Flachenbrand after the tour ended because he couldn't take the teasing.
You should check out Skrupel. German grind, better than Yacopse imo.

If you like gookcore, have you checked out Nice View, I.R.F., 324, Bathtub Shitter, Insane n' the Brain, Impregnate Trichomonas, Ego Fix, Multiplex, Power of Idea, Senseless Apocalypse etc etc?

There's a Victory Records commercial on MTV2 that says "Fighting Corporate Rock" or something like that. Funny thing is, Victory Records is now owned by Sony Music. That, and they've been charging kids $16.99 for cds for the last 4 years.

The attitude of most popular music is schemed up by 50 year old executives in tall buildings. Sony music is making a fortune by making fun of themselves.

oh yeah. this is my theory with gangster rap too. Some 55 year old jewish guy in a big office one day was probably like, "how about in this new video we have everybody untie their shoes, wear women's nylons on their heads, and then dress up in these ridiculously colored clothes so they all look like gay rodeo clowns". Then the dumbasses who attend my school think it's a great idea and give me a reason to make fun of them.

someone mentioned You're Fired! - those guys fuckin rock; fuckin fast as hell.

some of my own choices:
Incantation
Angelcorpse
Sepultura (Beneath the Remains and Arise)
Damien Storm
Cradle of Filth - yes, they've gone downhill over the years; yes, the band members look pretty gay; they may not be "true" black metal and they have been poking their heads into the mainstream lately, but i still think these guys have released some pretty solid albums.
Hypocrisy
Enslaved
Rotting Christ
Amebix (specifically the Monolith album)

I also have to agree with dyingmuse in that doom metal is a severely under appreciated genre.

Caliban? Caliban gets more credit from more people then they ever deserved. All they do is rip off cliche metalcore breakdowns (from American bands) and slap together cliche melodic parts (from European bands) and rip off Converge every other song. I saw them once and I was bored out of my skull.

I'm gonna give that a "Dissection did this 10 years ago" thumbs down

I'll second Meads of Asphodel and Skyforger, and add pretty much every other solid folk metal band that's out these days besides Finntroll (Korpiklaani/Shamaan, Turisas, Tuatha de Danann, Skyclad, etc....fun, goofy stuff). These bands get a lot of love elsewhere, but get shit here in the States. I'll also throw in some pet black metal bands like Vinterriket, Hellveto/Blakagir, Anti, Urfaust, and Mystic Forest. With the weird atmospheric stuff being the big trend these days, these guys should be "huge"!

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Apr 19,2006 3:39pm
Hellveto is extremely underrated. I also have Blakagir and Mystic Forest, both are good. Turisas is very fun.

So many underrated black metal bands...but many of them do tend to revolve around specific formulas that were dictated by the pioneers (Burzum/Darkthrone/Mayhem etc), many of them are a very hard sell. So many great bands, say, from France alone...

Motherfucker, how could I forget!

SEIKIMA-II is an underrated band. Japanese theatric glam-metal from the 80s on, their early albums were great musically and they were sort of like a Japanese King Diamond.

CIRITH UNGOL were doing heavy metal since the 70s, long before 99.999% of all other iconic bands and they never get any appreciation either.

i love october tide. i wish it was still a project, but i'm glad katatonia got back together and made more good albums. the new one isn't great, but it's still decent.

have you heard the new daylight dies album? it's great stuff in the vein of october tide/old katatonia. their last album was even more like october tide than the new one. check them out if you haven't heard them.

Not an official "show" but they did play live once. Scott Hull playing guitar, three vocalists, and some dude dicking with a drum machine - the crowd went nuts for them!

Anyone who thinks Goatwhore is underrated is a fucking moron. Hands down.

Acid Bath and Agents of Oblivion are underrated.

toggletoggle post by arillius nli at Dec 4,2006 1:35am
Oh yea, and the most overrated band I've ever noticed is Trivium. I'm getting sick of these fucking kids worshiping that band. Matt Heafy came to the New England Metal Fest 2003 and was handing out Trivium's EPs. He smelled of stale cheese and had long hair. He was wearing a Burzum shirt. He gave me 3 EPs and told me to distribute them. I haven't even touched them. The next year after that, the band gets huge. He cuts his hair off. Bands fucking worthless, always has been.

Trouble

Goatwhore

Zircon

RAOV

Revocation

how are those bands underrated?

trouble - maybe a little underrated, but everyone considers them legends. i don't understand how the status of legend could allow you to be underrated.

nevermore - i love this band, but how are they underrated? they've been one of the highest profile metal bands over the past decade and have done many big tours.

goatwhore - very popular metal band. i guess they're underrated in a top 40/billboard charts sense, but not with the metal crowd.

zircon - one of the deservedly most popular local metal bands today, and they play more high profile shows than almost every local band.

RAOV - another very popular band in this area and rightfully so. what makes them underrated?

revocation - my favorite local metal band. i don't think a day has passed since they released their demo that people on this site haven't praised them.

Garden of Shadows kicks ass, but I already said that.

Add Shadow from Japan to the list.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Dec 5,2006 2:16pm
i didn't read everything in here, and it's been a while since i heard the name green carnation. light of day, day of darkness is a fucking masterpiece.

and i'm pretty sure a great deal of people listen to diabolical masquerade, but either way, i don't think enough people listen to them. nightwork and death's design are probably 2 of my favorite albums of all time.

last but not least, the 1st darkane album, rusted angel, seems to be kind of forgotten since it was originally on WAR records and was out of print for a long time. that album is far, far, far, far better than anything else they put out.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Dec 5,2006 2:19pm
i was unaware of your love for green carnation and diabolical masquerade, mr. fucking richards. both are among my favorites. i applaud your great taste in music, sir.

kjetil from green carnation can really put away the guinness.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Dec 5,2006 2:27pm
fuckin a, i forgot a couple more...

decrypt-their split with stump is fucking awesome; one of the most high energy bands that i've only heard a small handful of people talk about. i think they broke up for a little while but are back, with the old drummer from mutilated i believe.

epoch of unlight-i think the only time i've ever seen their name mentioned was in the armageddon shop's recent arrivals thread from last night. what will be has been is a damn good album

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Dec 5,2006 2:31pm
i am glad we are on the same page, mr. gillis. i have a broad spectrum of musical taste, and both diabolical masquerade and green carnation tickle my fancy oh so delicately.

toggletoggle post by HOoker nooasijdfaojd at Dec 5,2006 2:32pm

it's all relative as far as RAOV and any other band being "underrated"

maybe he thinks that because we have yet to get signed after however many years.

what will be has been is a classic. i used to listen to that album constantly back when it came out. i was listening to caught in the unlight a couple weeks ago too. i always wondered why they never got more popular.

SEPTIC FLESH

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Dec 5,2006 2:53pm
i bet if epoch of unlight were a new band around this time, they'd get a lot more exposure since they fit in with bands like psyrcroptic, gorod, spawn of possession, and other technical death metal bands, even if they don't sound exactly like them.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Dec 5,2006 2:59pm
septic flesh is sick!!!

how about construcdead? that band is fucking amazing. i think they just got automatically lumped together with all of the monotonous melodic death metal bands coming out left and right for a few years. construcdead are probably one of the best melodic death metal bands and they need more recognition; i don't even know if they're still a band, but the album "repent" is a fucking classic

I'll be the first to admit that the midgets and miniature Stone Henge was a bit self-indulgent to say the least. All bad taste aside, I thought the music was all there maaaaannnnn.
