Definitely. But since you're a history buff, correct me if I'm wrong - didn't Japan choose to HAVE the treaty? In the movie, the Emperor rejects the treaty after Tom Cruise stumbles in; I thought in reality Japan actually accepted the treaty which opened the doors up for more westernization, including the game of baseball.

Haha yeah it's not really accurate - Commodore Perry knocked on their door with a monstrous fleet of warships and demanded they open their ports for trade. The emperor was given a few months to decide and finally accepted because essentially they had nothing to match western firepower and there were many upper class Japanese that were already "westernized" and were in for a money bomb.

But I thought the schism between feudal Japan and the ruling class was represented well.

And Tom Cruise can be a good actor and I like his movies but I would stay far away from him if I saw him on the street.
