I started playing the original, 70's Dungeons and Dragons, first edition, with my fiance, every Sunday. I played this a lot as a kid. I eventually beat it. I used to go to D&D camps, I was so into it. Bought myself my own dice yesterday. I get to be DM now, some other people come and play sometimes too. I was using her dice up until now.
This is awesome. 3-pamphlet OD&D or hardcover AD&D?
Not AD&D. Never got into that, the original was before that, AD&D seemed to much like a cash in to me, every time I played, everyone had different rules because they all had different manuals they had bought, and then everyone had to buy all the same manuals to play together. Then more manuals came out, and the cycle continued. I have 9 manuals. Those are all the manuals I have ever used, along with a tenth book that describes the world, campaign, and rules that I created or adapted in order for the players to have somewhere to play in. You can beat the entire first edition of the game with only owning/buying 5 short player's guides, as long as you know a DM who owns the other 4, and has a campaign of his own that you can play in. It was all about imagination, not dishing out big bucks so you could play in the Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance worlds.
